Coronavirus Warning Issues to Avoid Large Crowds

Public health authorities for Clark County in Vancouver Wednesday issued new recommendations for populations at higher risk of serious illness from novel coronavirus or COVID-19.

Public Health is recommending – but not requiring – that people at higher risk stay home and away from large groups of people as much as possible. This includes large public gatherings where there will be close contact with others, such as conventions, sporting events and concerts.

People at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19 include people older than 60; people who have serious chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and lung disease; and people who have weakened immune systems.

“We’re issuing these recommendations because we’re particularly concerned about our seniors and people with underlying medical conditions, who are vulnerable to severe illness from COVID-19,” said Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County health officer and public health director.

Anyone who has questions about whether their condition puts them at risk for COVID-19 should consult their health care provider.

Public Health is not recommending restrictions on public gatherings or events at this time. As the situation evolves, Public Health recommendations may change.

Public Health is still recommending everyone take steps to keep themselves and others healthy, including washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands; cover coughs and sneezes; use a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands; stay home and away from others when sick; avoid close contact with people who are sick; clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched.

The Clark County Public Health novel coronavirus webpage at clark.wa.gov/public-health is being updated daily with test results and the latest information about the situation in Clark County. Additional information about people who are risk for serious illness from COVID-19 is available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, cdc.gov/coronavirus.
